Upcoming CLEAN UPS :
Sunday 17th December 10am-12pm
We now meet in the car park adjacent to Prince’s Pantry, on the other side of the road from The Arnolfini. It’s a bit more spacious so people can distance themselves. If you have a water-craft you wish to attend in, then please come along, and moor up on the pontoon highlighted on the picture below, making sure to leave enough room for other vessels. Please don’t moor up on the pontoon used by Bristol Ferry Boats!

If you display any symptoms of Covid-19, or are under any impression that you might be carrying the virus, we would advise to please not attend our event. We receive a wide range of volunteers including vulnerable people.
We're keen to keep people safe from Covid-19 and so we will be taking some precautions. We'll have hand sanitiser gel available. Our usual litter picking equipment will be available, but if anyone does have their own gloves or litter pickers we encourage people to bring them to reduce sharing of tools. We do have these things though, so don’t worry if you don’t! Our gloves are machine washed between each litter pick, so when we offer you a pair we can ensure that they are fresh and clean!

Whilst our litter pick was ongoing, a bungee-jumping session was taking place from a crane across the water, thus ensuring the odd scream and bouncing human on a rope was seen from time to time! We found a boomerang and a large net (quite useful!) amongst other things. We tried to concentrate on fag butts this time round and collected a large number without any trouble. One volunteer even turned up with his own home made litter picker! Many thanks to the Harbour Office staff who helped us as well as to all who came.

GI Joe (I think?) came out to help us along with some rowers from the Bristol Gig Club and other volunteers to help clean up. It's possible we're having some impact as we're collecting less waste over time as you can see from our final haul in the photo below. Good news! Many thanks to the Harbour Office staff who helped us as well as to all who came.

38 of us came out on a lovely day and collected 12 bags of rubbish, an excellent turn out! Many thanks to the Harbour Office staff who helped us in our mission and to all the volunteers. We had some kayaks out in force as well as a Cornish gig and some enthusiastic rowers from the Bristol Gig Club.

A cycling event blocking off the City Centre and a slightly rainy Father's Day Sunday didn't put off a plucky selection of twelve volunteers, who collected seven bags of waste and a filled a wheelie bin. Well done team! Many thanks to the Harbour Office crew and to everyone who made it.

A great turnout to celebrate Hubbub's Poly Roger and it's time in Bristol, and it's trip out with Clean Up Bristol Harbour on Sunday. We had a flotilla of rowing vessels accompany us from Cumberland Basin, and we all made our way down to the Arnolfini to meet up with volunteers. We had the Sea Cadets with us along with rowers from the Bristol Gig Club and Bristol Channel Social Rowers along with paddleboarders and other enthusiasts. Emma Williams of Bristol Waste along with Clare Marshall and Jo Taylor of Sustainable Hive came along, with James Kemble, Ben Wookey and Roly from the Harbour Office representing the Harbour Office. Many thanks to everyone for all their enthusiasm and thankfully the drizzly weather did abate a little for the litter pick... there was even a little ray of sun at one point!

A great turn out with the Bristol Adventure Sea Cadets coming in three boats, fantastic! We also had Bristol No. 3 Diving Club come out in a RIB to help out as well. We had over forty of us out and collected 18 large bags and a full wheelie bin of waste by the time we were done. A dredger had been at work in the Harbour and thus some old cans came floating to the surface, including a Coca-Cola can with a use-by date of Dec 1989! An old Pepsi can has a magic eye picture on from the 90s, anyone remember those?

19 of us went out including myself and three Harbour Officers, and the weather held out okay whilst we collected our usual haul of litter from around the Harbour and in the water. A cannabis plant and a bin bag of related plant material were discovered floating in the water, bit of an unusual find which was later handed over to the police. Many thanks to the Harbour Office staff Ben, Kev and Roley and to all the volunteers who spent their time helping.

Sunday 20th of January 2019
A great turnout for a January Sunday, 38 of us in total including myself and three Harbour Office staff. We collected 11 bags of general waste and 5 bags of recyclable, so fairly quiet litter-wise compared to past events. As it's the middle of winter, footfall around the Harbour probably isn't that high so let's see how things pan out as the weather warms up. A pumpkin, some nightclub photo-booth photos and some books about Pablo Escobar were amongst our finds this month. Thank you to all the volunteers who came along and to Tony Moore, Kev and Roley for skippering and all at the Harbour Office for their time and efforts.

Sunday 16th of December 2018
What started out as a humdrum cloudy afternoon turned rather grisly in the second hour, and everyone got pretty wet but carried on regardless! When the Harbour Office vessel Water Witch returned from her trip round the Harbour, all the volunteers on board were crammed into the small cabin with the skipper Kev! It looked pretty cosy. A dozen of us collected 6 bags of waste, and filled a wheelie bin. Four of the bags of waste were all recyclable. A pair of huge y-fronts were amongst the finds, plus a couple of also rather grisly dead birds. One volunteer on foot got as far as the Thekla and spent almost the whole pick clearing the area of litter.
Thank you all to the Harbour Office staff including our skippers Roley and Kev, and to all the volunteers for their dedication in the wet weather. That's it for an eventful 2018, so best wishes for the winter holidays to everyone and a Happy New Year.

A sunny November Sunday afternoon saw 32 volunteers come out for a mixture of boat- and land-based litter picking around the Harbour. Over a couple of hours we collected 23 bags of rubbish in total, plus a filled rubble sack and a wheelie bin. Of these, 4 were filled with recyclable glass and 11 various recyclable plastic and metal.
Thank you to all the volunteers and to James and Miles of the Harbour Office, and to Quakers in Britain who sent a group of young people down who all got stuck in with enthusiasm! Our next event will be on Sunday 16th December.

Yet another incredible attendance as the Clean Up hosted 40+ volunteers to clean up the Harbour.
We collected 36 large bags of waste in total, with 20 of them general waste, 12 of them plastic and metal recyclables and 4 of them recyclable glass bottles. Amongst the empty bottles were a lot of spirits, and not cheap supermarket vodka either... Courvoisier V.S. Cognac, Kraken Spiced Rum, Grey Goose Premium Vodka, Moet Champagne, all sorts! Representatives of local firms Arup and VWV came out again, as well as some of the Bristol Channel Social Rowers which was great. Apologies to any other groups I left out, please feel free to make yourselves known!
Many thanks to the Harbour Office, and to all our volunteers! Please come back again!

The weather held off for a very successful clean up with over 35 in attendance, not that you'd know it from the pictures as I was a bit distracted and should have snapped more! We collected 9 bags of general waste and 10 bags of recyclable materials. Amongst the usual offerings we also had a kettle, a hubcap, a hula hoop, and for the first time ever not just one of a pair of shoes but both! We had repeat appearances from Ben of SUP Bristol and some volunteers from Bristol Channel Social Rowers amongst new and familiar faces, great to see a good turnout and thank you to all the volunteers. Many thanks to the Harbour Office staff, and to Xeena for her help.

A record-breaking afternoon (since I've been doing it last year anyway) as the Clean Up hosted 40+ volunteers in our efforts to clean up the Harbour. We ran out of litter pickers and tabards! Very positive of course, although apologies to those who had to soldier on without them. It was so busy I didn't actually get that many photos so if anyone has any more please get in touch!
We collected 33 bags of waste in total, with 21 of them general waste so not much of it recyclable this time round. After a busy summer period with a lot of use of the Harbour, it was no surprise to collect 10 bags of drinks cans and bottles of various kinds however. A boxing glove was a bit of a surprise, along with a hubcap and the usual shoes. No footballs this time! A first.
Many thanks to the Harbour Office, and to all at Bristol Ferry Boats especially Will and Xeena. Thank you to all our volunteers! Please come back!

Another wonderfully sunny day during which we were joined by representatives of Project AWARE and PADI as well as Manu Bustelo on his #ChargeToTheCircle. Great to meet everyone and if you want to follow his progress, check out www.chargetothecircle.com. Thanks to Ben Wookey for some of the photos. We collected 18 bags of rubbish in total, half of which were recyclable. We also fished out some Cillit Bang, ironically - Bang! And the bottle is gone courtesy of Clean Up Bristol Harbour. Good work people! Many thanks to the Harbour Office and to all who attended.
Sunday 17th of June 2018
The Mayor Marvin Rees and Kurt James of the Clean Streets Campaign joined a healthy turnout of 25 others for a busy afternoon on the water, collecting 19 bags of litter, filling a wheelie bin and a rubble sack on top. Of that, 10 bags were recyclable - mostly drinks cans and bottles. We also found a giant inflatable 'member' on top of the usual shoes and footballs, this time including a giant inflatable beachball. Stag and Hen parties are a regular source of litter in the Harbour.
Many thanks to the Mayor and Kurt James for coming down to join us on a Sunday - luckily the rain held off and we had a good afternoon's picking and everyone enjoyed themselves. Some members of the Bristol Channel Social Rowers joined in too, who have been coming over the last months. Many thanks to the Harbour Office and to Bristol Ferry Boats for their support. Happy Summer Solstice everyone!

Great turn out on a lovely day. 22 of us including the 3 Harbour Office staff. In a couple of sunny hours we collected 8 bin bags of general waste, 8 bags of recyclable metal and plastics, 1 bag of recyclable glass, 1 bag of recyclable cardboard and a wheelie bin full of general waste. Loads of non-recyclable polystyrene and of course, there were footballs and tennis balls as per usual. Thank you to all the volunteers, Ben from SUP Bristol, and everyone at the Harbour Office.

There must be a lot disappointed footballers around the Harbour - we found yet another football along with a drinking horn and some hefty chunks of polystyrene this time. Thank you to everyone who came. Ben from SUP Bristol joined us again, and a kayaker called Steve got stuck in freeing up a lot of the waste caught in between the The Matthew and the Harbour wall. Thank you to the Harbour Office staff for all their help and don't forget, our next clean up is Sunday May 20th, please see our Clean Ups page for more info.

We found a message in a bottle amongst the polystyrene and shoes! I will upload a couple of photos shortly with a translation. A big thank you to all the volunteers who came, and to the Harbour Office for being generally awesome. The weather turned out lovely and Ben from SUP Bristol joined us on a stand up paddleboard - visit www.supbristol.com to find out more about paddleboarding in the Harbour. A surprisingly healthy turnout today for a grey and uninspiring February afternoon, over twenty of us came out in force and collected twenty-odd bags of rubbish by close of play. We had more people than we could fit on vessels in one go, so people took it in turns to litter pick on land and on water. A few members of the public said thank you to us on the way round! Thank you to the Harbour Office and Bristol Ferries for all their efforts and to everyone for coming along. Let's hope for more sunshine next time!

A healthy group of twenty-plus volunteers turned out today, including a large and enthusiastic contingent from Bristol's office branch of Arup, an engineering consultancy firm. Though the weather tried its best to put us off, a can-do attitude prevailed and another huge haul of rubbish was collected, including hundreds of cigarette butts, drinks cans and bottles, wet cardboard boxes, a can of butcher's tripe mix for dogs, a pink welly and not forgetting of course the ever pervasive polystyrene containers.
Many thanks to all who volunteered, Xeena and all at the Bristol Harbour Office. Looking forward to more daylight hours and clearer skies!

The sun took some of the chill out of a November Sunday and about twenty or so volunteers turned out. Between us all we collected another huge pile of rubbish bags to hand over to Bristol Waste for recycling and disposal. A few people turned out in their own water craft so between them, Bristol Ferries and the Harbour Office's craft we had five boats out in total! Some good skills were shown with the boat hook and we found ourselves a football and a hubcap for our troubles, amongst other things. Thanks to Will, Lizzy and Xeena and all at Bristol Ferries and to all at the Harbour Office for their help. Well done, volunteers! Join us next month, at a slightly earlier time. See our Clean Ups page on this website or our Facebook page for more details.

The sun came out for a lovely afternoon and another very ample collection of rubbish. We were mostly on foot this time round, and managed between us to cover quite a large area of the land surrounding the harbour. We had a large turnout of about 38 people including one in a kayak and local councillor Mark Wright, possibly a record attendance! Thank you to Xeena for all her efforts, to the Harbour Office and to all the volunteers, a really great effort from everyone who came and looking forward to next month.

Plenty of laughs and enthusiasm were in evidence from all who came today, we had a lovely afternoon. A cheer went up when we fished out a Doc Martin boot in pretty good condition - anyone know a one-legged friend who takes a size 5? Thank you to the Harbour Office, Bristol Ferry Boats including Will and Xeena and to all the volunteers! The weather was great and we had one volunteer come along with his own boat to add to the mix, which was much appreciated. People witnessing us at work were asking us about joining in, and a couple of passers by even thanked us!
We accumulated several bags worth of litter, including filling up a rubble sack. The long handled net in particular proved very popular! After packing up, several of us wound up being ferried towards the Novia Scotia for a tipple or two in the evening sun.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came, and to the Harbour Master Tony Moore, all of whom were wonderfully helpful on what transpired to be a more dramatic afternoon than we had anticipated! Just before the scheduled start of the event, there was a loud explosion on a vessel called the Roehampton moored just a stones throw from the Bristol Ferry Boats HQ, and our meeting point by the Arnolfini. The boat sank very quickly, and two people on board were rescued. Luckily, they did not experience life threatening or life changing injuries. The explosion was apparently caused by a gas canister. A lot of emergency services personnel and yellow tape appeared, accompanied by the press. Margaret, the boat we've often used during our Clean Ups thanks to Bristol Ferry Boats, was adjacent to the Roehampton and was fortunately undamaged but had to be taken away to safety.
We thought the event might have to be cancelled, but after a delay, it was decided that we would continue, partly on foot. Everyone was very helpful and understanding, with the Harbour Master kindly providing his services and the volunteers happily getting stuck in going around the harbour on land. That said, Ian - first time volunteer - came along with his boat and took four of our group around the harbour! A very big thank you to Ian. We collected several bin bags worth of litter within an hour, including an unbelievable amount of cigarette butts. Another successful litter pick! Well done everybody, great effort!

Bristol Harbour Festival special!
Clean Up Bristol Harbour took part in a small campaign #LuvBristol that was put together to raise awareness about the littering/plastic pollution.
We ran regular boat trips around the harbour. It was a great success, with some very interested and encouraging volunteers signing up.
And we collected a huge amount of rubbish!
As always thank you very much to the Harbour Crew, Bristol City Council and Bristol Waste for the support!

Thank you so much to Bristol Ferry for showing up! Life savers! The harbour crew has an emergency they had to attend to. Thanks to the Ferry company we were able to take the volunteers around the harbour and for an amazing little journey up the river to Beese's at the end of it!
Now that's why I love Bristol!

We had a lovely bunch of people today! The harbour was really busy with activities: dragon boat race, rowers, trees up river... so our harbour crew was really busy but still sent along one of their boats! Thank you! Again, a big THANK YOU to all the very keen returning volunteers (note that we had two newbies - all the others have become regulars!
Special thanks to Bristol Clean Streets for all of the equipment provided,
Severnside Sub Aqua Club for coming back and as always to the harbour crew.

With temperature close to zero, 21 people managed to find the courage and enthusiasm to come spend over an hour to pick up floating litter around the harbour! So, a massive unbelievable "Thank you" to all of the volunteers! At first glance you would have thought the harbour was pretty clear, well with a bit of looking around we managed to picked up: 2 and a half bin bags worth of polystyrene, 5 bags worth of plastic and a one of cans!
Not to forget, we always come across some pretty random finds and this month we had: some umbrella left over, a couple of rubber ducks and a barbie doll!

Happy New Year!
A fantastic way to start a new year! We had a great turn out despite the forecast with Bristol Ferry and some young new recruits!
We had a really good collect: 1.3kg of polystyrene, 10.5kg of recyclable plastic, 6.8kg of glass and 1.8kg of cans.
Amongst it all we also found some toothbrushes, straws, cigarette filters, a book, some snazzy long jones, an inflatable doll, sadly some needles...but the BEST of all: a Marathon wrapper!!! Once again thank you all for coming and making litter picking so much fun!!!
Special thanks to Bristol Ferry, SUP Bristol, Severnside Sub Aqua Club for coming back and as always to the harbour crew.

Very exciting to see so many vessels on the water this month: kayakers, gig rowers, canoers, stand up paddlers! That's not it, a few more familiar and new faces to join our embarcations as we manage to take everyone on the water!
A very productive afternoon, leaving the harbour cleaner as it ever has been.
Special thanks to Severnside Sub Aqua Club and Bristol Pilot Gig Club for bringing troops.
Merry Christmas everyone! See you soon in the New Year!

We had the great pleasure to see returning faces from the Paddle Board community who brought along new recruits. Also, we had the pleasure of getting a couple of people from the Friends of Harbourside Reed Bed.
Collecting the day before of the biggest full moon in 68 years means more rubbish than usual! Why? Full moon means higher tides means more rubbish coming into the harbour! Once again, we collected enough polystyrene take away container to fill up a wheelbarrow.
Some food for thoughts: A BBC article about why NYC banned the use of polystyrene in 2015.

Our second event was such a success! We had a fantastic turn out with a couple of stand up paddlers, a gig rowing boat and a few avid walkers.
We collected enough polystyrene take away container to fill up a wheelbarrow, plus a couple of hand full of 6 pack plastic rings.
The plastic rings have a direct impact on the wildlife around the harbour. At the time of our clean up, there was a record of a cormorant living around the harbour having one of these stuck around its neck, which eventually can prevent them from feeding and therefore perish.
